Avian Malaria is caused by haemosporidian parasites. Haemosporidian parasites are extremely diverse and infections of these parasites have been shown to adversely affect the avian host’s health. Despite the important role they play, little is known about haemosporidian infections in raptors. Understanding the parasitology of raptors has important consequences for ecosystems as raptors, being at the top of the food chain, are often keystone species within ecosystems.
