Blue Duiker Reintroduction

Blue Duiker Reintroduction Project

(Philantomba monticola)

This project is a long term reintroduction program run by FreeMe Wildlife to release Blue Duikers back into areas where their populations have been decimated.

Collaborating and working with land owners and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, areas have been carefully selected taking potential poaching, predators and human conflicts into account. Natural home range size, terrain and food availability are important factors considered to determine how many Blue Duiker can be released in a selected area without inundating it.

We are currently reintroducing Blue Duiker to the Dargle Forest, which once supported a healthy population of these tiny antelope.  The Blue Duiker populations in the area were affected by several historical factors, but efforts have been put into place to protect, preserve and conserve this forest habitat and these factors supported the return of  Blue Duiker to this area.

To date five Blue Duiker have been released into the area, and there will be more to come…
