DNA collection for SANBI (South African National Biodiversity Institute) and UKZN (University of Kwazulu-Natal)
FreeMe KZN are assisting with the collection of DNA samples for the SANBI and UKZN DNA data banks by collecting DNA from animals admitted to FreeMe KZN.
DNA can be extracted from very tiny sample sizes, so this requires only a few feathers or a few strands of hair/fur or a tiny blood smear from a live patient, or a tiny sliver of tissue from a deceased patient. Samples are stored in labelled sample tubes for collection by SANBI or UKZN.
The samples collected are valuable to present research and future research in understanding the species we are dealing with, their role in an ecosystem, and their contribution to biodiversity.
