FreeMe Wildlife has been involved with bi-annual surveys of the bird of prey populations on Fountainhill Estate near Wartburg for the past 5 years. Fountainhill Estate believes in a philosophy of ‘farming in harmony with nature’ and to this end have developed a network of researchers, specialists and consultants from many organisations in both the agricultural and wildlife sectors to contribute to better management practices to promote and protect biodiversity of fauna and flora on the Estate.
Understanding the trends and influences affecting apex predators such as birds of prey can lead to better management practices as apex predators are a reflection of healthy trophic levels and intact ecosystems. Looking at the breeding, roosting and hunting behaviour of both endemic and migratory raptors provides a base for long term data collection that will both reflect and project decisions made with regards to best practice management of land use and habitat preservation in conjunction with recommendations made by other key stakeholders and players on Fountainhill Estate.
