Owl Box Project

Owl Box Project

The Owl Box Project was started in 2014 as part of urban raptor research and conservation. All data collected goes to research on urban owl species. It allows for community involvement as part of environmentally friendly pest control programs and supports the breeding efforts of resident urban owl populations.

Education presentations are done for schools, enviro-clubs and other interested groups to encourage a better understanding of owls and the important role they play in the environment.

The project works in close collaboration with rehabilitation centers, supplying owl boxes for displaced owl families, as well as orphans ready to be released into safe, new environments.

Where possible, landowners who are choosing poison free solutions to rodent problems, are encouraged to make use of owls and owl boxes as an option.

Wood Owl Box

African Wood Owls are small owls who inhabit dense, natural forests. They eat mostly invertebrates, and smaller prey species. They have between 1 and 3 chicks. They are natural cavity nesters, and prefer hollows in trees. They have adapted to older established gardens in urban areas where big trees and natural hollows are preserved. Their box has a ‘monkey-proof’ partition to protect the eggs and chicks from bigger predators.

Spotted Eagle Owl Box

Spotted Eagle Owls are the most common owl species in South Africa. They show a high habitat tolerance and are found readily in urban areas where their choice of nests sites vary. They predate predominantly on rodent and avian prey, but also take bats and snakes. They have on average between 2 and 4 chicks, and prefer an open box design due to their robust size.

Barn Owls are rodent specialists and a family of Barn Owls can predate on roughly 2500 rodents annually. Family groups are varied in size with up to 14 chicks recorded in  a single nest.  Most broods average between 4 and 6 chicks. Barn Owls prefer more open grassland habitats and have adapted well to farmland and pastoral areas where they often frequent buildings.
