Scrub Hare Reintroduction

Scrub Hare Reintroduction

(Lepus saxatilis)

This project is a long term reintroduction program run by FreeMe Wildlife to release Scrub Hares back into areas where their populations have been decimated.

Collaborating and working with land owners and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, areas have been carefully selected taking potential poaching, predators and human conflicts into account. Natural home range size, terrain and food availability are important factors considered to determine how many Scrub Hares can be released in a selected area without inundating it.

We are currently reintroducing Scrub Hares into the Mfuleni Reserve/Conservancy in Zululand, which once supported a healthy population, however they have disappeared over the years due to poaching and various other factors. New ownership and management is now in place so this is a golden opportunity to bring these small mammals back into the area and FreeMe Wildlife are proud to have initiated this project working together with the Wild Tomorrow Fund and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife.

To date two Scrub Hares have been released into the area, and there will be more to come…
