DNA Collection

DNA collection for SANBI (South African National Biodiversity Institute) and UKZN (University of Kwazulu-Natal)

FREEME Wildlife are assisting with the collection of  DNA samples for the SANBI and UKZN DNA data banks by collecting DNA from animals admitted to FREEME Wildlife.

DNA can be extracted from very tiny sample sizes, causing minimal stress as only a few small feathers, a few strands of hair/fur or a tiny blood smear is all that is needed from a live patient. In the case of a deceased patient, a tiny sliver of tissue is all that is required. Samples are stored in labelled sample tubes for collection by SANBI or UKZN.

The samples collected are valuable to present and future research in growing a better understanding of the species we are dealing with, their role in an ecosystem, and their contribution to biodiversity.
